CAMP ST. VOLODYMYR August 18 – 25th, 2013

Camp St. Volodymyr will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. We have been enriching campers in their Ukrainian Catholic Faith and Culture since 1983. Located in Kelowna campers spend a week participating in age tailored activities such as Ukrainian dancing, arts & crafts, singing, catechesis, sports and water activities.

Camper fees: $260 before July 4, $310 after July 5. 3rd/4th child from same family is $150 each.

Bus transportation is available from New Westminster.

Volunteer Staff
Camp St. Volodymyr is again looking for counsellors to help with the planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth, and daily living skills. These positions are ideally suited for outgoing individuals who enjoy working with children and enjoy being outdoors. Counsellor application forms can be downloaded from the website and are due May 15, 2013.

This year we are looking for a volunteer to help us out with singing. Please contact us asap if you are interested.

Donations are always greatly appreciated. We are always happy to accept food donations of vegetables, fruits, cereals, and treats for children, as well as monetary donations. Tax receipts can be issued with donations of $25 or more.

His Beatitude our Patriarch Sviatoslav has invited the faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church to make a pilgrimage to Kyiv in 2013 to celebrate the 1,025th anniversary of the baptism of Kyivian-Rus, Ukraine! The major celebration will be a special Divine Liturgy on Sunday August 18 at the Holy Resurrection Sobor in Kyiv.

Join Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, OSBM of Winnipeg and Bishops David Motiuk of Edmonton, Ken Nowakowski of New Westminster and Bryan Bayda, C.Ss.R. of Saskatoon on an official pilgrimage to Ukraine 7-21 August. The Pilgrimage will begin in Western Ukraine visiting Lviv, Zarvanytsia, & Ternopil before heading out to Kyiv for the major celebrations. In the next few weeks more details will be announced as soon as the program is finalized.

Statistical yearbook on the situation of Catholics in the world

In the year 2010, the number of Catholics increased by 15 million. The total number is more than 1.9 billion people. The increase was seen on every continent but especially in Africa, which saw the most growth with more than 6 million new Catholics.

In the Church there are 5,104 bishops, which is 39 more than in 2009. Also increasing is the number of priests. During 2010 there were 1,643 new priests. So the total figure stood at 412,236. However, there was not an increase in all continents. For example, Europe had 905 fewer priests than in the previous year. Also, the total number of non-ordained religious dropped to 436 and stood at 54,665. The number increased in all continents except in the Americas. In addition, the number of catechists rose to over 3 million, a figure that is considered key to the Year of Faith. In the social sphere, the Catholic Church serves more than 5,300 hospitals, 18,000 clinics, 17,000 nursing homes, 547 leprosy centers and 15,300 marriage consulting centers.

In the education sector, the number of nursery schools run by the Church increased by more than 2,000 from 68,119 to 70,544. The number of primary schools decreased by 124 from 92,847 to 92,723 with 30 million alumni, but secondary education increased its presence with over 1,000 new institutes, from 42,495 to 43,591 with 17 million students.

UGCC Synod Pays Special Attention to Celebration of 120th Anniversary of Birth of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj

On February 8-9, 2012, in Lviv-Briukhovychi, the 56тг session of the Synod of Bishops of the Kyiv-Halych Supreme Archbishopric of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was held.

The Synod was preceded by a brotherly meeting with Roman Catholic bishops acting in the Ukrainian territory. Therefore, after the first working Synod session, a joint prayer was conducted to open the Year of Remembrance of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj.

The main theme of the session of the Synod was the parish as the community of prayer. Bishop Venedykt (Aleksiichuk) made a report on the liturgical life in the parish.

The Synod paid considerable attention to the question of celebrating the 120th anniversary of birth of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj. In this context, proposals from representatives of the church community, state authorities and local government bodies were reviewed and decisions were passed to duly celebrate the jubilee. In particular, the participants approved the text of the Pastoral Address of the Synod and decided to organize a pilgrimage of the UGCC to Zarvanytsia in 2012 for the occasion of the jubilee.

Official Logo Unveiled for World Youth Day 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, FEB. 9, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The colors of the Brazilian flag and the famous Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro form part of the official logo for World Youth Day 2013, designed by Gustavo Huguenin, 25.

The designer prayed about the theme of the event, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19) before submitting his winning drawing, the official WYD Web site reported.

“In this passage we see that Jesus met His disciples on a mountain. So, from the beginning, the image of Christ the Redeemer wouldn’t leave me — Jesus, who is on a mountain. Besides being the universal symbol of Rio de Janeiro, it has everything to do with the theme. In the process of creation I first put the concept which must be transmitted. It should have the figure of Jesus, the figure of the disciple and maybe some reference to nations. These three words would be essential if they could be transmitted graphically. Christ the Redeemer represents Christ, the disciple is represented by the heart, for the disciple is one who carries Jesus in his heart, and the nations are represented by the forms that recall Rio de Janeiro, the city which at that moment will be the heart of the world for the youth and which will welcome them, in reference to the mountain and the sea,” Huguenin explained.

The logo is heart-shaped with a depiction of the Christ the Redeemer statue in yellow in the middle. The upper half of the heart is green, with a small white cross on the left, and the bottom half is blue.

WYD 2013 will be held in Rio from July 23 to 28, 2013.
