Camp St. Volodymyr has been enriching campers in their Ukrainian Catholic Faith and Culture since 1983. Located in Kelowna campers spend a week participating in age tailored activities such as Ukrainian dancing, arts & crafts, singing, catechesis, sports and water activities. Camper fees: $260 before July 12 and $310 after. 3^rd and 4^th child from same family is $150 each. The deadline is Thursday, July 26^th. Bus transportation is available from New Westminster. STATEMENT BY METROPOLITAN LAWRENCE HUCULAK OF WINNIPEG CONCERNING THE RECENT EVENTS IN CANADA HONOURING THE SERVANT OF GOD, METROPOLITAN ANDREY SHEPTYTSKY

The Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada was pleasantly surprised by recent events held in Toronto and Ottawa honouring the Servant of God, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church from 1901 – 1944.

These events were organized by the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (UJE), which describes itself as a privately organized, multinational initiative launched in 2008 as a collaborative project involving Ukrainians of Jewish and Christian heritage and others, in Ukraine and Israel as well as in the diasporas. The work of this organization engages scholars, civic leaders, artists, governments and the broader public in an effort to promote stronger and deeper relations between the two peoples. To carry out their mission in 2012 the UJE took on a very unique project. At their own expense and planning, the UJE brought from Ukraine to North America the members of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, which included some 20 heads of religious communities in Ukraine. Participants included: His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk (Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church); His Holiness Filaret (Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kyivan Patriarchate); His Eminence Mefodiy, (Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church); Most Reverend Markiyan Trofimyak (Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine); Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich (Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine); Sheikh Ahmad Tamim (Grand Mufti of Ukraine); and various representatives of Protestant denominations and communities in Ukraine. In addition there were various resource persons and assistants accompanying the group.

This group of leaders came together to pay honour to the person and legacy of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, recognizing his openness to members of other faiths and Christian denominations, his dedication to the safeguarding of human rights of all persons in Ukraine, and his defense of spiritual and religious values in relation to both civil and military authorities. Much of Metropolitan Andrey’s leadership occurred during times of war, which called for heroic persistence in maintaining the spiritual and human values that he championed. His defense of Jews during the Nazi occupation, and particularly his personal efforts in hiding Jews at his own risk were especially noted. As such, it was this model of a consistent ethic of integrity that the Council chose to guide their own actions and interactions with governmental and social leaders for the development of a more just, ethical and compassionate society in Ukraine.

Organized in a relatively short period of time this visit of the church and religious leaders of Ukraine to North America had a very full agenda. The high point of their trip to Canada, was the visit to the House of Commons in Ottawa, on Tuesday, April 24^th, where they witnessed the motion made by the Honourable Jason Kenny, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturism, honouring Metropolitan Sheptytsky. The motion was supported by all political parties in the House of Commons and passed unanimously with a standing ovation. The motion stated: This House is united in expressing Canada’s recognition of Andrey Sheptytsky’s courageous actions, compassion for his oppressed Jewish Ukrainian countrymen, and enduring example of commitment to fundamental human rights as humankind’s highest obligation. The religious leaders of Ukraine also met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The participants later attended an Interfaith Gathering at Machzikei Hadas Synagogue in Ottawa, hosted by Rabbi Rueven Bulka. Later that evening, the UJE held a Kosher Banquet in their honour at the Chateau Laurier Hotel. The keynote speaker at the banquet was Minister Jason Kenny. In attendance were various current and former MPs, including former Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray, as well as Canadian religious and civic representatives.

On Wednesday, April 25, participants attended a symposium at the Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies on Metropolitan Andrey, entitled: Ethical Action in Extreme Conditions. The Sheptytsky Institute plans to publish the symposium presentations in its publication LOGOS: A JOURNAL OF EASTERN CHRISTIAN STUDIES.

From Ottawa the members of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations travelled to Washington DC and New York for further events.

The Father and Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, in conversation with Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak of Winnipeg, extended greetings to all the faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada. Regrettably, due to the heavy agenda and short duration of this trip, His Beatitude was not able to personally greet many members of the Ukrainian Catholic Community on this occasion. Nonetheless, he is looking forward to his visit to the various eparchies in Canada later this year.

As the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada prepares to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of the arrival of its first bishop to Canada, Blessed Bishop Nykyta Budka, it is worthy to note that it was Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky who spearheaded the establishment of a Church hierarchy in Canada and the appointment of Budka as the first bishop. Following Sheptytsky’s two pastoral visits to the faithful in Canada in 1910 and 1921, the recent events in Toronto and Ottawa were, as if it were, a third visit to Canada by the Servant of God, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky.

Let us continue to remember in our prayers the cause of Beatification of Metropolitan Andrey, which is now underway.

Ottawa, April 25, 2012 — Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney yesterday introduced a motion, that was passed unanimously by the House of Commons, expressing Canada’s recognition of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky’s courageous actions and compassion for his oppressed Jewish Ukrainian countrymen during World War II.

Metropolitan Sheptytsky (1865-1944) of the Ukrainian Catholic Church was the leader of Western Ukraine’s largest faith group during the Second World War. Throughout this darkest period of Europe’s history, he spoke out eloquently against anti-Jewish violence and urged his congregants in a famous homily: “Thou Shalt Not Kill”. He rescued and provided shelter to Jews by allowing them to hide in Ukrainian monasteries, saving over 160 of his compatriots.

“Metropolitan Sheptytsky is an enduring example of commitment to fundamental human rights as humankind’s highest obligation,” said Minister Kenney.

The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies (MASI) at St. Paul University in Ottawa held a symposium this morning to examine Sheptytsky’s ethical action in extreme conditions. The event, organized by the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter Initiative (headquartered in Toronto), in cooperation with the MASI, hosted a delegation of representatives of the Jewish community along with leaders of the Ukrainian Catholic, Ukrainian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Evangelical and Adventist churches, along with the leader of the Ukrainian Islamic community.

Mr. Speaker, during the darkest period of Europe’s history, as Nazi Germany sought to exterminate Jews in their Eastern European homelands, we learned of those who chose to speak out against the slaughter and do what is righteous. Among them was Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church who risked his life and that of his fellow clergy to shelter and rescue Jews from certain death. Thanks to his sacrifice, Metropolitan Sheptytsky saved over 160 Jewish lives.

Leaders of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and religious organizations representing the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths join us in Ottawa today to honour the courageous actions of Metropolitan Sheptytsky. They are hosted by the Canadian group, the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter, which has done amazing work to build bridges of mutual understanding between these two communities.

Metropolitan Sheptytsky lived as a model to the world. Let his actions serve as an example to all of us that we should never shrink away from our obligations to stand up against evil and do what is right.

«Сміливість, яка проявлялася в діях Шептицького у темний період історії України, має універсальне значення. Адже, ризикуючи власним життям, а також життям своїх священнослужителів і монахинь, він захистив сотні євреїв під час Голокосту. Він зробив це, знаючи, що з погляду тодішніх людей це було божевіллям», – сказав Блаженніший Святослав (Шевчук), Глава УГКЦ, 24 квітня 2012 року, під час симпозіуму «Етичні дії в екстремальних умовах», що відбувся в Оттаві (Канада) на базі Інституту імені Митрополита Андрея Шептицького.

Предстоятель Церкви, однак, вважає, що такі «безрозсудні» вчинки сьогодні, як і тоді, дуже важливі. «Для істинного блага людства кожного покоління повинні бути такі, які готові вийти за рамки людського розрахунку і прийняти жертовну любов, – любов, яка поважає життя від зачаття до природної смерті».

На думку Блаженнішого Святослава, «наша увага до етичної поведінки в минулому має спонукати нас до роздумів про проблему морального есканізму. Наше обурення подіями минулого, на жаль, не завжди означає для нас етичну поведінку сьогодні. Тому незламні принципи Митрополита Андрея в критичних обставинах можуть привести нас до плідних роздумів щодо збереження актуальності моральних цінностей – це дуже своєчасна тема».

«Ми молимося, щоб Україна і всі країни могли позбутися антисемітизму раз і назавжди. Крім того, ми категорично кажемо «ні» ідеології та менталітету, який призвів до голодомору в Україні. Цей голод 1932-33 років, і нацистський Голокост – поряд з ідеологією комунізму і нацизму, які призвели до цього – залишили рани в наших душах», – наголосив Блаженніший Святослав.

«Перед лицем демонічних нацистських гримас, Шептицький врятував сотні людей. Він був справді Божою іконою, змагаючи до вдосконалення єдності між людьми – між євреями і християнами, між православними, католиками, і протестантами (і якби він жив сьогодні: і мусульманами також), через любов до Бога. Тому я хотів би заперечити тим, хто сьогодні так часто припускає, що розмова про Бога призводить до поділу і ворожнечі. Звичайно, що тільки живий Бог, а не ідол, зцілює і приносить мир», – підкреслив Глава УГКЦ.

Крім того, Блаженніший Святослав пригадав усім присутнім, що серед єврейських хлопчиків, врятованих Шептицьким, був син убитого нацистами головного рабина Львова Курта Левіна.

У своїх мемуарах, опублікованих у 1994 році, Курт Левін написав: «Компасом, який вів мене всі ці роки, була пам’ять про зустріч з Митрополитом Андреєм (Шептицьким) і його братом Климентієм. Це два духовні гіганти, які є орієнтиром для багатьох. Час показав, що насіння, засіяне ними, дало багатий і корисний урожай».

Напередодні симпозіуму, 24 квітня, Глава УГКЦ разом із Главами та повноважними представниками українських Церков і релігійних організацій зустрівся з Прем’єр-міністром Канади Стівеном Гарпером. «Ми представляємо мільйони людей, які у своїх найгірших моментах, як і всі люди, могли б схилитися на бік ненависті і нетерпимості. Разом із тими, хто залишився живим після Голокосту, ми проголошуємо: «Ніколи більше». І молимося, щоб світ позбувся антисемітизму раз і назавжди», – заявив на цій зустрічі Блаженніший Святослав.

На закінчення Глава Церква процитував слова із листа блаженного Омеляна Ковча із концентраційного табору «Майданек»: «У таборі ми всі рівні: поляки, євреї, українці, росіяни, латиші та естонці… Тут я бачу Бога, який однаковий для всіх, незалежно від релігійних відмінностей, які існують серед нас».

Як ми повідомляли раніше, із 22 до 25 квітня 2012 року делегація Всеукраїнської ради Церков і релігійних організацій здійснила візит до Торонто (Канада), де відбувалися офіційні заходи в рамках програми вшанування спадщини Митрополита Андрея (Шептицького). А з 26 до 29 квітня представники ВРЦіРО перебувають у Сполучених Штатах Америки, де також відвідують заходи, присвячені вшануванню спадщини слуги Божого Андрея. У поїздці ВРЦіРО до Канади і США бере участь Блаженніший Святослав (Шевчук), Глава УГКЦ.

Нижня палата парламенту Канади – Палата громад одноголосно визнала прикладом «відданості основним правам людини» діяльність Митрополита Української Греко-Католицької Церкви Андрея (Шептицького) (1865 – 1944) під час Другої світової війни. Канадські парламентарії відзначають, що «в найпохмуріший період історії Європи, під час масового вбивства євреїв і нацистської окупації Митрополит Шептицький вголос виступив проти насильства у своїй проповіді «Не убий». Завдяки його зусиллям врятовані понад 160 євреїв, один із яких був присутній на засіданні Палати громад парламенту Канади під час ухвалення рішення.

враховучи, що лідери і представники всіх основних віросповідань України — християнського, юдейського та мусульманського — прибули з візитом до Канади з метою визнання того добра, що його було вчинено митрополитом Шептицьким;

і враховуючи, що завдяки діям митрополита Шептицького з надання захисту і прихистку євреям було врятовано більше 160 осіб, включаючи деяких, що присутні з нами в цій Палаті сьогодні;

ця Палата в єдності заявляє про визнання Канадою сміливих вчинків Андрея Шептицького, його співчуття до співвітчизників — українських євреїв, підданих переслідуванням, — та його вікопомного прикладу відданості основним правам людини як найвищому обов’язку людства;

ПОСЛАННЯ БЛАЖЕННІШОГО СВЯТОСЛАВА ДО МОЛОДІ

Улюблена в Христі українська молоде!

Переживаючи Квітну неділю, яка безпосередньо підводить нас до таїнства Пасхи Господньої, знову звертаюся до вас зі своїм словом. Найперше хочу подякувати вам за всі можливості зустрічей та спілкування з вами впродовж останнього року. Здійснюючи візити до наших громад у різних країнах світу, я шукав цих зустрічей. Свою радість з приводу пережитого хочу висловити словами блаженного Папи Івана Павла ІІ: «Я чекав на вас і ви прийшли, і я вдячний вам за це!»

Сьогодні Христова Церква через свої Богослужіння покликала нас до участі в особливій зустрічі: процесії мешканців Єрусалима зі своїми дітьми, які вийшли вітати довгоочікуваного Месію, що тріумфально входить до своєї столиці. З усіх жестів, привітань і вигуків цієї події пропоную зупинитися на одній деталі.

Євангелист Марко зауважує, що, готуючи для Ісуса осля, Його учні зняли свій одяг, поклали на ослятко і лише тоді Христос сів на нього. У момент урочистого входу Христа до Єрусалима молоді люди впізнають у Тому, котрий їде на осляті, Того, хто сидить на херувимах та, за висловом святого Івана Золотоустого, є «серафимів Господь і цар Ізраїля». А далі роблять щось подібне до того, що перед тим вчинили Христові учні: скидають свій одяг і стелять його під ноги осляті на дорозі, якою мав проїхати Ісус (пор. Мр. 11, 7 – 8). Очевидно, що це не просто збіг обставин та випадкове повторення якогось звичного жесту. Тож постараймося разом відкрити його зміст.

Для сучасної молодої людини одяг має неабияке значення. Часто він є засобом її самовираження, тобто способом вияву власної особистості. Особливо звертають увагу на колір і найменші деталі свого вбрання ті, хто за його посередництвом маніфестує приналежність до певних молодіжних субкультур, угрупувань чи товариств. Насправді, у такому підкресленні одягу дуже часто приховане глибоке прагнення молодої людини, щоб інші помітили всю її неповторність, оригінальність і красу.

У Святому Письмі одяг був, з одного боку, знаком чогось, що проминає. Псалмоспівець молиться до свого Творця: «Спервовіку світу ти заснував землю і небеса – діло рук твоїх. Вони загинуть, ти ж будеш стояти; все постаріється, немов одежа. Наче вбрання, ти їх міняєш, і вони пройдуть. Ти ж усе той самий, і літам твоїм кінця немає» (Пс. 101, 26 – 28). Людина, як істота створена для вічного, після свого гріхопадіння мала вбрання, зроблене самим Богом (Бут. 3, 21). Це було знаком певного протиріччя: створена для великого, вона живе в нікчемному, створена для вічності – живе у смертному, створена для слави – прикриває свій сором. З іншого боку, одяг вважали виявом зовні невидимого: гідності людини, її місця у суспільстві або в релігійній громаді, внутрішнього стану тощо. Зміна одягу не могла відбутися без внутрішньої переміни особи і була лише проявом цієї переміни. Особливо таке значення має одяг та його колір у книзі Одкровення, в якій читаємо про процесію, подібну до тої, котру спостерігаємо під час Господнього входу до Єрусалима. Тут апостол Іван бачить у видінні небесний Божий престол, а перед ним цілий натовп людей від усякого народу і племені, які були в білому одязі й тримали пальмові гілки. Цікаво, що їхні слова співзвучні із вигуками «Осанна!», котрими вітали Христа в Єрусалимі: «Спасіння Богу нашому, що сидить на престолі, і Агнцеві» (Одкр. 7, 9). Євангелист пояснює, що ці люди є тими, хто «обмив одежі свої і вибілив їх у крові Агнця» (Одкр. 7, 14). Тут білий одяг є лише виявом внутрішньої чистоти і безгрішного життя того, хто омив себе в Крові нашого Спасителя, що подається нам у Таїнстві Євхаристії як Причастя життя вічного.

Молодим людям притаманне інтуїтивне відчуття правди. Коли хтось видає бажане за дійсне або його зовнішній образ лише прикриває внутрішню порожнечу – вони таку особу одразу відчувають. Це справджується як в побутовому, так і в релігійному житті. На цьому наголошував вже пророк Ісая, коли казав: «Цей народ устами тільки мене почитає й губами тільки мене шанує: а серце своє віддалив від мене, і страх його передо мною – то лише вивчена заповідь людська» (Іс. 26, 13). Як часто молоді люди втомлені лише формальною приналежністю до церковного життя! Святі отці розуміли жест знімання одягу перед Христом як заклик не лише формально з Ним привітатися, а й покласти перед Ним усього себе, дозволити Його Слову пронизати все своє життя та стати Його носієм у світі (пор. Блаж. Веда, In Marcum). До цього закликає нас і Божественна Літургія: «Самі себе, і один одного, і все життя наше Христу Богові віддаймо!»

Часто чуємо, що сучасна людина не може віднайти орієнтирів в особистому і суспільному житті. Нерідко вона намагається приховати внутрішню порожнечу за маскою зовнішньої безтурботності, розваг чи споживацтва. Однак, залишившись віч-на-віч зі своїм сумлінням, почувається позбавленою власної гідності й не може не визнати, що її зовнішній образ, який вона демонструє іншим – «одяг», далеко не відповідає тому, що відбувається в її душі. Сучасна молодь тужить за єдністю внутрішнього і зовнішнього у своєму житті, вона прагне гармонії, втраченої краси, одне слово – прагне спасіння.

Насправді єдиним орієнтиром для нашого життя є Господь, якого ми сьогодні вітаємо співом «Осанна». Лише Христос може запевнити людині повноту життя, свободу від минущого та внутрішню красу і чистоту. У святому Хрещенні ви зодягнулися в Нього, як про це свідчить святий Павло в посланні до галатів, кажучи: «Ви, що в Христа хрестилися, у Христа зодягнулися» (Гал. 3, 27).

Заохочую вас до глибшого пізнання правд святої віри та до щоразу активнішої участі в житті парафіяльної спільноти. Ви, такі вразливі до будь-якої фальші, покликані бути носіями автентичного і живого християнства в Церкві й суспільстві. Ваша участь в житті Церкви не має бути лише зовнішньою, формальною, а повинна стати виразом Вашого духовного єднання з Господом і з братами та сестрами у вірі. Особисто пізнати Живого Бога можна лише з допомогою живої особи: духовного наставника, учня Христового, який допоможе відкрити скарб віри вашої Церкви та поведе до безпосередньої зустрічі зі Спасителем. Я щиро переконаний, що саме наша молодь допоможе всій нашій Церкві, вірні якої живуть у різних країнах чи навіть культурах, уникнути релігійного формалізму, натомість зробить її живою, завжди сучасною і зрозумілою для теперішньої людини та, поклавши до ніг Ісуса все тимчасове й минуще, проголосить лише Його своїм Господом – центром і вершиною свого життя.

New Westminster Eparchy will have opportunity to meet and pray with young leader

Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, will visit Vancouver on the Labour Day weekend this year. The 42-year-old bishop will use the weekend to visit the New Westminster Eparchy (diocese) before he heads to Winnipeg to attend the synod of Ukrainian Catholic bishops Sept. 9-16.

“For me personally this visit will be special, because I have known His Beatitude (Shevchuk) for many years, actually while he was still a post-graduate student studying in Rome in the early 1990s,” said Eparch (bishop) Ken Nowakowski of New Westminster.

“His visit to us will mean much more than just welcoming a dear friend. It will add to our own eparchial commemorations of the appointment of Blessed Nykyta Budka as the first Ukrainian Catholic Bishop for Canada.”

Eparch Nowakowski will accompany his friend throughout his B.C. trip.

“We are planning the visit so that many of our parishioners as well as those who are close to our church will have an opportunity to meet and pray with him.”

Major Archbishop Shevchuk will be visiting B.C. from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4. He is expected to bless the newly renovated Bishop Jerome Chimy Eparchial Centre in New Westminster. After the blessing there will be a prayer service and reception at Holy Eucharist Cathedral.

He will also be the main celebrant at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St. Mary’s) Ukrainian Church in Vancouver and attend a formal banquet in the parish hall afterward.

The major archbishop will be in Kelowna Sept. 2, where he will be the main celebrant at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. He will also attend a formal banquet at Dormition of the Mother of God Parish.

Eparch Nowakowski was astonished that a year had already passed since the major archbishop’s enthronement. “He will be celebrating his 42nd birthday this coming May, and his youthfulness has certainly meant that he has had the energy to do many things this first year.”

In his first year, Major Archbishop Shevchuk visited many eparchies throughout the world, headed the annual Ukrainian Synod of Bishops in Brazil, oversaw the creation of three new archeparchies (archdioceses) in Ukraine, and participated in the meetings of the European Episcopal Conference.

He also found time to write pastoral letters and receive an honorary PhD from Fordham University in New York City.

Eparch Nowakowski added, “I think that his contribution to the entire Catholic Communion has been outstanding.”

“Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil 4:4)

Dear young friends,

I am happy to address you once more on the occasion of the 27^th World Youth Day. The memory of our meeting in Madrid last August remains close to my heart. It was a time of extraordinary grace when God showered his blessings on the young people gathered from all over the world. I give thanks to God for all the fruits which that event bore, fruits which will surely multiply for young people and their communities in the future. Now we are looking forward to our next meeting in Rio de Janeiro in 2013, whose theme will be: “Go and make disciples of all nations!” (cf. Mt 28:19).

This year’s World Youth Day theme comes from Saint Paul’s exhortation in his Letter to the Philippians: “Rejoice in the Lord always” (4:4). Joy is at the heart of Christian experience. At each World Youth Day we experience immense joy, the joy of communion, the joy of being Christian, the joy of faith. This is one of the marks of these gatherings. We can see the great attraction that joy exercises. In a world of sorrow and anxiety, joy is an important witness to the beauty and reliability of the Christian faith.

The Church’s vocation is to bring joy to the world, a joy that is authentic and enduring, the joy proclaimed by the angels to the shepherds on the night Jesus was born (cf. Lk 2:10). Not only did God speak, not only did he accomplish great signs throughout the history of humankind, but he drew so near to us that he became one of us and lived our life completely. In these difficult times, so many young people all around you need to hear that the Christian message is a message of joy and hope!

I would like to reflect with you on this joy and on how to find it, so that you can experience it more deeply and bring it to everyone you meet.

1. Our hearts are made for joy

A yearning for joy lurks within the heart of every man and woman. This is particularly true for you, because youth is a time of continuous discovery of life, of the world, of others and of ourselves. Each day is filled with countless simple joys which are the Lord’s gift: the joy of living, the joy of seeing nature’s beauty, the joy of a job well done, the joy of helping others, the discovery of our talents, our successes. Yet each day we also face any number of difficulties. Deep down we also worry about the future. How can we distinguish things that give real and lasting joy from immediate and illusory pleasures?

2. God is the source of true joy

Whatever brings us true joy, whether the small joys of each day or the greatest joys in life, has its source in God. God created us in his image out of love, in order to shower his love upon us and to fill us with his presence and grace. God wants us to share in his own divine and eternal joy, and he helps us to see that the deepest meaning and value of our lives lie in being accepted, welcomed and loved by him. God’s infinite love for each of us is fully seen in Jesus Christ. An encounter with Jesus always gives rise to immense inner joy. Christian joy consists in being open to God’s love and belonging to him.

5. The joy of conversion

Dear friends, experiencing real joy also means recognizing the temptations that lead us away from it. Our present-day culture often pressures us to seek immediate goals, achievements and pleasures. Experience teaches us that possessions do not ensure happiness. To have lasting joy we need to live in love and truth. We need to live in God. God wants us to be happy. That is why he gave us specific directions for the journey of life: the commandments. If we observe them, we will find the path to life and happiness.

7. Witnesses of joy

Dear friends, I encourage you to be missionaries of joy. We cannot be happy if others are not. Joy has to be shared. Go and tell other young people about your joy at finding the precious treasure which is Jesus himself.

Christianity is sometimes depicted as a way of life that stifles our freedom and goes against our desires for happiness and joy. But this is far from the truth. Christians are men and women who are truly happy because they know God is always holding them in his hands. It is up to you, young followers of Christ, to show the world that faith brings happiness and a joy which is true, full and enduring. The Gospel is the “good news” that God loves us and that each of us is important to him. Show the world that this is true!

Be enthusiastic witnesses of the new evangelization! Go to those who are suffering and those who are searching, and give them the joy that Jesus wants to bestow. Bring it to your families, your schools and universities, and your workplaces and your friends, wherever you live. You will see how it is contagious. You will receive a hundredfold: the joy of salvation for yourselves, and the joy of seeing God’s mercy at work in the hearts of others. And when you go to meet the Lord on that last day, you will hear him say: “Well done, my good and faithful servant… Come, share your master’s joy” (Mt 25:21).

May the Blessed Virgin Mary accompany you on this journey. She welcomed the Lord within herself and proclaimed this in a song of praise and joy, the Magnificat: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” (Lk 1:46-47). Mary responded fully to God’s love by devoting her life to him in humble and complete service. She is invoked as “Cause of our Joy” because she gave us Jesus. May she lead you to that joy which no one will ever be able to take away from you!

Vatican says number of Catholics, priests, bishops worldwide increased

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The number of Catholics in the world and the number of deacons, priests and bishops all increased in 2010, while the number of women in religious orders continued to decline, according to Vatican statistics.

At the end of 2010, the worldwide Catholic population reached 1.196 billion, an increase of 15 million or 1.3 percent, slightly outpacing the global population growth rate, which was estimated at 1.1 percent, said a statement published March 10 by the Vatican press office.

Catholics as a percentage of the global population “remained stable at around 17.5 percent,” it said.

The statement reported a handful of the statistics contained in the 2012 “Annuario Pontificio,” a yearbook containing information about every Vatican office, as well as every diocese and religious order in the world.

Officials of the Vatican Secretariat of State and its Central Office of Church Statistics presented the first copy of the 2012 yearbook to Pope Benedict XVI during an audience March 10.

Detailed statistics in the yearbook are based on reports from dioceses and religious orders as of Dec. 31, 2010.

The percentage of Catholics declined slightly in South America from 28.54 percent to 28.34 percent of the regional population, and dropped considerably in Europe from 24.05 percent to 23.83 percent. The percentage of Catholics increased in 2010 by just under half a percentage point in Southeast Asia and Africa.

The Vatican said the number of bishops in the world increased from 5,065 to 5,104; the number of priests went from 410,593 to 412,236, increasing everywhere except Europe.

The number of permanent deacons reported — 39,564 — was an increase of more than 1,400 over the previous year. 97.5 percent of the world’s permanent deacons live in the Americas or in Europe.

The number of men joining a religious order showed “a setback,” the Vatican said, with an increase of only 436 male religious worldwide in 2010.

The number of women in religious orders fell by more than 7,000 in 2010, despite showing a 2 percent increase in both Asia and Africa. At the end of the year, Catholic women’s orders had 721,935 members.

The number of seminarians around the world showed continued growth, from 117,978 at the end of 2009 to 118,990 at the end of 2010.

In the last five years, it said, the number of seminarians rose more than 14 percent in Africa, 13 percent in Asia and 12.3 percent in Oceania. Numbers decreased in other regions of the world, particularly Europe, which saw a 10.4 percent drop in the number of seminarians between 2005 and 2010.
